- Planning for the Middle St. Vrain fall project October 5 and 6. The Forest Service is purchasing the buck and rail, rebar, and timber-locks for the project. Volunteers should bring battery powered drills and drivers to screw the buck and rail fencing together. Fencing will be installed about 1.5 miles from the Middle St. Vrain trailhead where the two water holes are. Gordon H to work with Forest Service sawyers to drop some trees across the Rock Garden bypass routes prior to the project. Possible extra work at the Rock Garden.
- Planning for the Moab, UT trip October 19 to 26. Rich H is planning which trails to run. Register for this trip on the club calendar. There are 10 vehicles signed up so far. Rich will be using What’s App to communicate during the trip.
- Gordon H gave a review of the two-day work project on the Middle St. Vrain to install buck and rail fencing along the two water holes. Gordon spent Tuesday Oct 1st with the Forest Service sawyers dropping large dead standing trees across the bypass routes of the Rock Gardon on the Coney Flats cutoff. On Saturday Oct 5th the volunteers hauled up the buck and rail fencing that had been purchased by the Forest Service. Unfortunately, the bucks had not been notched or assembled. This made hauling them easier but added a lot more work to construct the bucks on site. With three small army trailers we began the hauling of the materials. Ray C had already went up the work area at the water holes and set up to begin the notching of the bucks with his chainsaw. It took two trips each with the three trailers to get the materials hauled up. This included “Joe” from the Rising Suns 4WD Club who was there on a club trip taking a load of rails up in his Toyota. Once some of the bucks were completed the fencing of three 50-foot sections began. The volunteers quickly assembled the buck and rail fencing along the sections around the two water holes to block off the off-road travel routes being used my motorized users. By the end of the day there was 150 feet of new buck and rail on the Middle St. Vrain. On Sunday about half the volunteers returned to build another 80 feet of buck and rail using up all materials except 8 bucks, due to running out of rails. Gordon H and Daniel W also ran up the Rock Garden to install a few signs on the downed trees deterring future bypass routes. One boulder was pulled out of the west side of the Rock Garden to create a “not so hard” way through the Rock Garden to alleviate the need for future bypass through the forest.
- Review of the by Greg B. On the way out the group had lunch in Fairplay and then crossed Mosquito Pass on their way to Buena Vista. It was windy as they crossed the pass. The first event was Mount Antero on Thursday. It was a warm day with some mountain sheep along the route. Greg talked to some Forest Service personnel about the Alpine Tunnel and Williams Pass for 2025. It appears they will be open for our 40th Anniversary in Salida. They also went to Baldwin Lake and made it to the mine up top. Friday was Old Monarch Pass to Tomichi Pass then back over Hancock Pass. The fall colors were excellent. Saturday Rich H lead Iron Chest while Greg B took some fishing Pomeroy Lake. Fish were caught and they had Birthday Cake before it snowed a bit. Sunday, they went over Tin Cup Pass which had about 5 inches of snow on top. They saw a moose, drove the Old Tin Cup route and had lunch at Mirror Lake. Monday, they ran Aspen Ridge which was also excellent for fall colors.
- John G gave a review of the Black Hills trip. Three from the club did the Jeep Jamboree in the Black Hills. There are a lot of rock crawling routes to do there. They stayed for three extra days after the jamboree.
- Motion to close meeting, Matt S, second by Mark G.
- Open discussion.

Middle St. Vrain and Coney Flats
From Roneva Keel at the Boulder Ranger District.
“We’ll be closing the Middle St. Vrain and Coney Flats gates on November 17th to coincide with the closing of the gates at the Camp Dick/Peaceful Valley campgrounds. With this latest round of weather and what we’re looking forward to in the forecast, I’m anticipating the snow will be closing that road around then anyway, if not sooner, but either way, I wanted to give you a heads up. We’ll also be posting some signage in advance of the closing date so no one is caught unaware.”
